Tom Wesselmann (1931–2004) was a prominent American artist associated with the Pop Art movement. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he initially studied psychology before turning to art, attending the Art Academy of Cincinnati and later the Cooper Union in New York. Wesselmann gained recognition in the early 1960s with his Great American Nude series, which combined elements of advertising, collage, and traditional painting to comment on American culture and sexuality. Throughout his career, he continued to innovate, incorporating new materials and techniques, such as shaped canvases and cut-out metal forms, to challenge the boundaries between painting and sculpture. His work remains influential for its bold exploration of form, color, and the depiction of the female figure.
